LASIK Exams from Your Katy Optometrist
LASIK is a minimally invasive refractive procedure to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness. It eliminates or reduces your need to wear glasses or contact lenses by reshaping your cornea using advanced laser technology. Before undergoing the procedure, your Katy optometrist needs to give you a LASIK exam consisting of tests to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK.
What to Expect During Your LASIK Exam
After evaluating your eyes, your Katy doctor of optometry will examine your retina using a high-powered, hand-held microscope. Your eye doctor will also evaluate pupil size, corneal thickness, severity of existing refractive errors, and tear production to ensure your eyes and vision issues will respond well to LASIK treatment.
Good candidates for LASIK are those with:
- Stable refractive errors (vision that hasn't changed for more than a year)
- Normal sized pupils (large pupils may cause emergence of halos or glare after LASIK)
- Healthy tear production (people with dry eyes may experience complications following LASIK)
- No health problems that could affect outcome of LASIK (autoimmune diseases, collagen vascular disease, diabetes)
If you have keratoconus, cataracts, glaucoma or retinal/corneal disease, your Katy optometrist may not recommend LASIK surgery until these conditions have been stabilized or resolved. In many cases, medical issues preventing you from having LASIK can be treated successfully to permit scheduling of your LASIK procedure.
Are You Eligible for LASIK Surgery?
Your eye doctor should be able to tell you whether you qualify for LASIK after completing your LASIK exam. Nearly 97 percent of LASIK patients are satisfied with the results of the surgery. You will notice improved vision within two to 24 hours after LASIK. No stitches or bandages are needed and LASIK treatment can be repeated in the future if your refractive error worsens.
